Taking Art to the Streets — Wearing Ka Pow Wow

January 14, 2009

With the coming of a new year is the departure of an old one.  Not only that, but it brings with it a fresh outlook and optimism for the year to come.  The last months of 2008 were gloomy ones; despite the occurrence of a landmark presidential election, the general mood reflected that of the still-lackluster economy—both in the financial district and on the runways.  A stark minimalism took over the drawing pads of several designers, resulting in unfussy, pared-down silhouettes rendered in dark colours and basic fabrics.

On the runways of the Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear collections, we were introduced to once-familiar concepts: bold colors and shorter hemlines, show-stopping shoes and the most captivating of all, exaggerated standout neckpieces.  From tribal inspired necklaces to ones boasting forward-thinking design and color, they added a much-needed sense of texture and dimension.

Here at Buydefinition we understand that although there is a brighter financial outlook for the upcoming year, the majority of spenders (us included!) don’t have the funds to drop a cool thousand on something that is at most, simply an accessory.  Our solution?  Ka Pow Wow’s ruffled neck-wrappings are affordable and incorporate a touch of creativity to even the simplest of outfits.

Though uniquely gorgeous, we too were stumped as to how exactly to wear the miniature works of art.  How were we supposed to add the pieces to an outfit in such a way that would be street-appropriate?  We have two very wearable solutions below:

Add texture.
For days where you want to be casual, comfortable, yet chic, we like pairing solid coloured Ka Pow Wow pieces with a similarly coloured top and sweater/jacket, contrasting pants/leggings, and simple shoes.

Contrast is key.
Looking like a fashion darling is simple with a standout accessory.  Add a contrasting Ka Pow Wow neckpiece to a completely monochromatic outfit to add an element of interest.

When in doubt, keep it simple.  The key to maintaining the wearability of an outfit is all about maintaining a sense of balance.  Trust your instincts and have fun mixing and matching!
